New boxing coach – Rocky

Vanda Boxing Club has been lucky enough to capture the coaching and expertise of Mujtaba Kamal. Kamal, or Rocky as he likes to be called, is our new boxing trainer, and offers a wealth of experience to all our members who are interested in learning boxing, and developing their skills.

Kamal (Rocky) represented India and the State of West Bengal at National and International Levels as a Boxer from 1995 to 2005 (Bantamweight). Notably he was Silver medallist at the Asian Games in Russia in 2001, and won Gold in Nepal in the South Asian Games in 2002. Kamal has an extensive background in coaching, and he is currently working with the West Bengal Junior Team in India. In 2002/03 he also assisted in training Cuban and Bulgarian World Ranking Boxers. His last fights were in Hong Kong in 2007 and 2008 for Charity, where he won both. He has 15 years of Boxing behind him, having also worked as a coach, training White Collar Boxers in Hong Kong, and is keen to pass this on to all our Boxing members.

Come down and meet Kamal, and try his training out – we promise you you will not be disappointed!

With the introduction of Kamal, VBC can now offer more Boxing classes in the mornings, and so the schedule has been updated. Additional Boxing Classes at Havelock Road will now take place on Tuesday, Wednesday & Thursday at 9am or 10am. So if you have the time to come down and start your day off with a bit of exercise, come down, meet Rocky, and get stuck in. Also, he will be working between the 12pm and 2pm Assisted Training slot to oversee pad and bagwork, and oversee sparring sessions. All the more reason to come down to Vanda during your lunch break and have a great work out.

“With the most successful and experienced boxing coach in Singapore (Alexis) along with the most successful and experienced Muay Thai Coach (Zach) backed up with the most promising young stars in their discipline (Ridhwan and Terence) along with established masters like Jaroon and Bangman…… there is without doubt, the best coaching team in Asia at Vanda Boxing Club.”

Plenty going on!

Vanda Boxing Club is a hive of activity at present so here is short update on what is going on.

Congratulations to Alexis and Michelle on the completion of their Functional Trainers course completed with Marcel Daane at Ngee Ann Poly. They are the first boxing coaches in Singapore to complete this course which included work on

  • Neural, Muscular and Skeletal Anatomy
  • Identifying Movement Patterns
  • Posture Analysis
  • Functional Movement Assessment
  • The Principles of Functional Training Design
  • Continuum of Progression – from basic strength exercises to complex multi-planar movements

The benefits of their training is already been felt by many in the gym based on the feedback we are receiving and it further motivates us to continue developing the coaching team.

n50762391261_5628-1The 18th July will see Vanda present 6 amateur boxers to the tournament to be held at Cairnhill CC. Alexis has been working hard with the team for over 4 months now and they have shown a great amount of commitment to their training. To prepare them for the rigours of competition, Alexis has had them up at Fightworks and Farrer Park for sparring and the experience has been invaluable. Our club is known for turning out well conditioned, well disciplined boxers and this group are no different.

Finally, we continue to support SABA and it’s efforts to develop the sport in this country. To support this further, Vanda Boxing Club and Vanda Promotions have donated an Everlast Competition Ring to SABA for their use.

sg-a4-boxers1 This Saturday, 27th June, will see the Vanda’s 6th White Collar Boxing team commence training for the IFS White Collar Boxing event on the 2nd October. Over the coming 12 weeks, these boxers will complete the WWCBA accredited course and progress to their licence allowing them to compete. Vanda has more experience than any gym in Asia in training White Collar Boxers, having trained over 100 of them in the last two years. We are proud of what we have achieved in this area and we are confident that once again we will turn out a team worthy of representing the club.

The event itself will be at Suntec with an estimated audience of over 1,200 people attending this black-tie event. We thank the sponsors for their continued support and we are delighted to report that all sponsorship opportunities have been taken up and Vanda Promotions has closed this out.

hk-boxers-updThrough our work with Vanda Promotions, the WWCBA and Boxingwhitecollar.com, we are exposed to a group of over three hundred White Collar Boxers in Asia Pacific. Whilst Vanda Promotions has an extensive list of events throughout the region, there was an ever growing group of people who had boxed on previous events, looking for competition, an opportunity to progress up the rankings and to be part of a professionally ran event. To this end Vanda Promotions contacted the WWCBA and requested that they stage the first WWCBA Asia Cup, whereby a team from Singapore would compete against a team from Hong Kong. The format will be an 8 person team with 6 experienced and 2 novice boxers including 1 female.  Jan Souleyman has been selected to Captain the Singapore team and Graham McNeill for Hong Kong. The event which will be held on either 20th November or 4th December in an arena format. The confirmed date and venue will be released later this week so check back for updates.

Over the coming weeks we will releasing a weekly video interview on this site, where we  will profile one of the boxers as they get ready for competition in either  the October IFS White Collar Boxing or the Singapore V Hong Kong Cup. We will give you an insight into their motivation, training methods and how their friends and family view their participation.
